Let Your AI Agent Log In Without Seeing Your Password – Free

In short

  • 1Password for Agents lets a supported AI agent request a login. You approve it, 1Password fills it in, and the agent never sees your password or one-time code.
  • It is free for 1Password Individual and Family accounts on 1Password.com. It launched on October 22.
  • The money angle: you stop pasting passwords into chats, and you can hand repeat portal work to an agent.

Never paste a password into an AI chat. But how else does an agent log in to your supplier portal? 1Password has an answer. This is not breaking news, because it launched on October 22. I am covering it as a how-to, because most people still have not set it up and the risk is real.

What it is The agent asks for a login to a specific site. You see the request and approve it. 1Password then fills the credentials in on the sign-in page. The agent gets in, but it never sees the password or the one-time code.

Which agents? Available now: Meta Muse (iOS, Android, web), SpaceXSI Grok Bot and Town Townie (both on mobile and desktop). Coming soon: Anthropic’s Claude Duet, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and dots, plus Instinct, Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo and Wajo.

What does it cost? Nothing extra. It is available at no additional cost for Individual and Family accounts on 1Password.com. One catch for us in Europe: accounts on 1Password.eu or 1Password.ca are not supported yet.

How to use it 1. Check which region your 1Password account is on. It must be 1Password.com. 2. Pick one of the agents that already supports it. 3. Connect the agent to 1Password through that agent’s own settings. I have not tested the exact steps, and they differ by agent. 4. Give the agent one low-risk task first, like checking an order status. 5. Approve each login request only for the site you expect. If the request looks odd, say no.

What it means The old way was to give the agent the secret. The new way is to give it a key card that opens one door, once, with you watching. That is how access to AI agents should work.

The weak spot: 1Password hides the password, but it does not limit what the agent does after it is logged in. A bad instruction can still do damage inside the account. And the agents most people use, Claude Duet and ChatGPT Work, are still marked coming soon.

Do the math: say an agent handles 5 recurring portal tasks, like order status checks and invoice downloads, at 15 minutes each, every working day. That is 5 x 15 x 22 = 1,650 minutes, or 27.5 hours a month. At €10 an hour for a helper, my assumption, that is €275 a month of work. The 1Password feature adds no extra cost. This is the cost being replaced, not a promise of savings, because the agent itself may cost money.

Ivan’s Take

Worth it if you use an agent that needs logins. The password is the one thing I never want an AI to see, and this fixes that at no extra cost. I would start with one low-risk portal and watch every approval. If your account is on 1Password.eu, you wait for now.
