Glowing orange streams merging into one pool feeding a chat bubble and a code terminal

ChatGPT and Codex Will Share One Usage Pool From December

In short

  • From December, ChatGPT and Codex draw from one shared allowance for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers.
  • The allowance is counted in credits per million tokens. Plus and Business keep a 5-hour limit. Pro does not.
  • The money angle: one heavy coding day can now eat the allowance you use for chat. Check your numbers before you cancel anything.

Your ChatGPT and your Codex are about to share one wallet. From December, OpenAI puts both on a single usage allowance. If you code with Codex all afternoon, your chat questions pay for it.

What happened

According to OpenAI’s updated usage documentation, as reported by Crypto Briefing and The Neuron, Plus, Pro and Business subscribers will draw from one pool across ChatGPT and Codex starting in December. The pool is counted in credits per million tokens. OpenAI moved to token-based pricing on April 2, so this is the next step of the same switch.

Plans still differ. Plus and Business keep a 5-hour limit. Pro does not have it, but weekly caps can still apply. Ordinary Instant chats will not count against the pool. In Settings you will see what is left and when it resets. After you hit the limit, you can buy extra credits.

One honest note. OpenAI’s own help page would not open for me, so these details come from the two outlets that read it. The exact numbers per plan were not in their reports. Check your own Settings when the change lands.

How to use it

  • Track one week. Write down when the allowance runs out and what burned it.
  • Split the work. Quick questions on Instant, heavy code runs on Codex. Instant is not counted.
  • Teams on Business. Find out who burns the pool. It is usually one or two people running long agent tasks.
  • Decide after a month. Extra credits or a higher plan? Let your own data answer.

Do the math: say you pay €20 a month for chat and €20 for a separate coding tool. That is €40 a month, €480 a year. If one shared pool covers both, you drop one tool and save €240 a year. But if heavy coding days empty the pool by Wednesday and you buy extra credits every week, the saving is gone. These round numbers are mine, not OpenAI’s prices.

What it means

OpenAI is turning two products into one. Good for you if you barely touch Codex: no more unused quota. Bad if you live in it: one hungry agent run can starve your chat.

Compare it with last week. Anthropic’s Claude Ultra dropped the 5-hour cap for $200. OpenAI goes another way: one pool, and Plus and Business still have the 5-hour window. Two companies, two ideas about how heavy users should pay.

Ivan’s Take

Shared pools are fine until you forget they are shared. I would not cancel a second tool in December. I would watch my own numbers for a month first. And if I coded a lot, I would keep every simple question on Instant.
