Claude Personal Finance: AI reading a bank account in read-only mode

Claude Can Now Read Your Bank Account: Read-Only, US Beta

In short

  • Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude: connect your bank and cards through Plaid and ask about your spending.
  • Access is read-only, with up to two years of transactions. Beta for US Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers.
  • Money angle: a free way to hunt for forgotten subscriptions and leaks, with no extra fee announced.

Claude can now read your bank account. It cannot touch your money, and that is exactly why this is interesting. For a solo founder who does the books on Sunday night, it could replace a spreadsheet and an hour of pain.

What happened

On November 5, Anthropic announced a beta called Personal Finance. You link bank and credit card accounts through Plaid. Claude then sees the bank name, account name and type, the last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transaction history.

Anthropic says access is read-only. Claude cannot move, manage or invest your money. It does not sell its own cards, loans or savings accounts, there are no ads or sponsored recommendations, and these conversations are not used to train its models.

Availability is limited. It is rolling out as a beta for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the US. No separate price was announced.

How to use it

If you are in the US and on a paid plan, start with the boring questions. Which subscriptions renew this month? Which merchant did I pay twice? What did I spend on software in the last 12 months?

Do the math: say Claude finds three forgotten subscriptions at €10 each. That is €30 a month and €360 a year back in your pocket. If it also saves you one hour of bookkeeping a month at €30 an hour, add another €360. Those are example numbers, not Anthropic’s, but the logic holds.

Two years of history is the real value. You can compare this winter with last winter, spot costs that crept up, and prepare numbers before you talk to your accountant.

What it means

Banks and finance apps just got a new competitor that already sits in your browser. The test is trust. You are handing a chatbot your balances and transactions. Read-only access and no training on these chats are good promises, but they are still promises.

It is also US only for now. If you live in Europe, you wait. Watch for the day it works with business accounts, because that is where the real money is.

Ivan’s Take

Worth trying, with one rule: connect a personal account first, not the one that holds your company cash. Read-only is a solid design choice and the subscription hunt alone can pay for itself. I will use it the day it supports business accounts, because that is where I lose track of small costs.
